what is a vinyl cutter?

November 16th, 2011

Vinyl cutters are used to produce lettering and graphics for signs, vehicles, windows and displays. Developed in the late 1980s, vinyl cutters revolutionized the sign industry and paved the way for numerous franchise and small businesses. In an industry formerly dominated by hand-lettering and screenprinting, the vinyl cutter allows the manufacture of simple signs and lettering with minimal training and artistic ability.

Computers and Software

Vinyl cutters are connected to computers via standard printer cables, or by USB connection. Cutters require special signmaking software, installed in a standard computer. The software allows lettering and scanned artwork to be properly sized, laid out and manipulated, and converts the information into computer language to be sent to the cutter. Software comes in many different forms, from simple lettering applications to full-blown graphic arts signage-design programs. Some software can be integrated with other manufacturers’ design applications and is largely the choice of professional sign makers.

Vinyl Cutters size

Vinyl cutters are available in many sizes, from 6″ tabletop units to 60″ or more. Cutters are based on pen-plotters, but use a small rotating blade rather than a drawing tool. Vinyl cutters receive information sent by the computer program, and cut the required design into sheet or roll material, which is usually adhesive backed. The operator “weeds”, or removes, unwanted background material, leaving the adhesive lettering or design intact for application.

Vinyl Cutting Material

Cutting material, or “media,” is purchased by the roll or sheet. Numerous colors are available, as are varying grades, finishes and thicknesses. Although the most common media is self-adhesive vinyl, specialty applications may use sandblasting mask, airbrushing and painting mask, ink-impregnated decal material for heat-applied garment decorating and opaque masking film.

Vinyl Cutter Features

There is a large price difference between similarly sized and equipped machines. Aside from usual features–such as feed mechanisms, floor stands and media-catch trays–internal components separate entry-level machines from industrial-quality units.

Buffer size: Buffers are internal storage devices that allow machines to process job-cutting information sent from the computer. Larger buffer sizes offer increased production and efficient use of time. Usual buffer sizes are from 1 to 5 megabytes.

Cutter speed: This is measured in inches per second (ips). The cutters ips is the speed with which it cuts the material. Ips does not designate material width, but rather the size of the lettering or image. Usual ips speeds are from 15 to 35 ips.

Motor Type: Stepping motors are standard in inexpensive machines, while servo motors are used in higher-end models. Servo motors are known for their reliability and smooth operation.

Downforce: Downforce is adjustable on all but the most basic machines, and is the measurement of force the blade employs upon the material. Heavy material, such as sandblast mask and specialty vinyl, requires higher downforce to cut cleanly. The usual range is 25 to 500 grams.

Laser engraver & cutter reviews

October 29th, 2011

“CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser engravers have been around many years. The reason I like CO2 laser engravers and the primarily reason that ……. evaluates this technology is because CO2 laser engravers can help museums and archaeologists render images from ancient civilizations.” We read this part from a magazine. Its good start and explanation for laser engraver and laser cutters.

Redsail is also developing 3D scanning and 3D printing (3D rapid prototyping) for similar reasons: these technologies are ideal for preserving cultural heritage. And all these technologies, can also help people to make busdines, make money, alive.

How to decide, and distinguish among so many brands laser cutters and laser engravers?

We saw many people, may magazine say that how cheap, how bad that China lasers are; but China still sells lots of lasers, and is still going to develop biger and bigger, more and more; that is because, the people in the world, need chinese lasers.

It is the truth that some other countries like USA or Japan that invented this kind of machine, but that is not fair to call “chinese copy ” just because we are later than some other people/.

We make it , because the world need it.

Redsail is working well in this line, and will be better in this road too. If you see how many pcs machinese we sold and how poplular we are when we show in the machine in many markets. You will find, something that is cheap, might not be that bad.

We are improving ourselves, we are trying to give more support to customers; We are responsible for our machine and customer. We suppose that is the most important thing.

Don’t laugh at the followers because followers one day may catch up you; don’t call those copy just because you made it first.

Trophy engraving laser machine

Difference between air cooling and water cooling spindle for CNC router

June 16th, 2011

When choosing cnc router, spindle is a big point that customers will ask.

There are two types of spindle for making a cnc router or wood router: air cooling and water cooling. All people knows that air cooling is expensive, while what is the real difference between the two types of spindle?

About air cooling first:

1. air cooling looks professional, nice in appearance. The most famous brand is HSD in Italy.  There are many other manufacturers in other countries, too. Like here, Redsail, China(advertising for ourselves)

2, Its installtion procedure is very simple and easy. It can work well just with air, no need to recycle like water cooling.

3, of course no pollution.

About water cooling:

1, cool the spindle by cycling the water. Its temperature will not be higher than 40 degree, so its cooling result will be better than air cooling(air cooling works by a fan). It can longer the life of the cnc routers.

2, No noise

3,  Its working life is longer than air cooling

4, finally, its cheaper, obviously.

But, there is a not very good point: water needs to recycle, so we needs to use a pipe, and it has possibility for water leaking.

Compare the two spindles, we can find that, if you have lots of money, and wants a nice appearance machine, aircooling will be good choice.

But to be practical, water cooling is also good choice.

It depends on what kind of needs you have, and what budget you have.

Laser engraving rubber stamp

June 11th, 2011

Stamp is a kind of special material.

Redsail provide two types of machine for making stamp. One is laser engraving rubber stamp from Redsail. The other is flash stamp machine.

Today we are talking about laser engraving stamp.

Two main uses:

1, self ink using stamp: we use laser engraver to engrave on rubber stamp, making self-use stamp or goverment or company stamp. It has to work with ink.

2, for carton box or plastic box: some people, they use laser engraving stamp to print log or files on the surface of the box.

Stamp laser engraving is not easy to do.

First, rubber laser engraving sometimes has to be smaller letters, and has to be deep. While laser beam is not thin enough so for rubber engraving, we have to use small powerful laser.

Second, in order to print well on the paper or other surface, we better make laser rubber engraving with an angle but not straight up directly. We call it grade-engraving.

Third, we have to pay much more attention to the scan gap and working speed, also back lash.

In order to make good laser engraving rubber, please go for redsail technical department.

Laser cutting wood

June 11th, 2011

Wood is another type of main material that the laser machine works on. Both cutting and engraving can be down very well. People use it to make artcraft, models for buildings or airplanes, or many other types. Most times, laser will burn wood , then wood surface will become black or yellow, for model making, black will be no problem but for common show, we have to take more attention.

There are many types of wood, some is very hard and some is soft. Laser cutting wood is only with good result for soft one, but for laser engraving, even hard wood will be with good result.

So when you want to do laser cutting wood, must be sure that we can do it with laser, and do it with good power, good speed. Too powerful will burn it, while small power can not cut it through. So it needs practice and time to get a better result. During this period of time, customer will become an engineer which will be a nice thing.

Now you can find here for some nice photos sample.

Laser cutting acrylic

June 11th, 2011

For acrylic cutting, the most common machine we are using is cnc router and laser cutter. In other articles we said that, laser cutting will be with better result then cnc router because it needs polishing after cnc router working.

So laser cutting acrylic now is the most popular way for many advertising companies; Redsail has different models for laser cutter, and of course, the more power we are using, the deeper acrylic we can cut.

Let’s see an example, Redsail laser cutting machine model CM1490–one of the most popular model in different areas. Because most acrylic size is similar with the machine size. We can install it with different power laser tube, and the cutting result will be as following:

60w laser tube: can cut about 10mm acrylic

80w laser tube: can cut about 15mm acrylic

100w laser tube? can cut about 20mm acrylic

130w laser tube: can cut about 25–30mm acrylic

But actually, the cutting result has great relation with laser tube quality and also the acrylic quality. And to get the best result we have to get a very good alignment.

Review for cnc router and laser cutter

June 8th, 2011

Redsail is the manufacturer for both cnc router and laser cutter. Most customers are using the two types of machine for one job, while what is the same feature and what is the difference between the two types machine?

Same feature:

1, they can do both engraving and cutting.

2, they both need water chiller or air chiller

3, they both need to make good file from software, and sometimes they are using same software

Difference:

1, the biggest difference is , after laser cutting, no need for polishing, but you have to work with a polish machine after cnc router working.

2, laser cutter is working with laser tube and cnc router is working with blade, obviously

3, Mostly, cnc router can cut thicker than common Co2 laser machine. But still need polishing.

Laser helps you to make a dream

May 19th, 2011

I talked to a customer Simon yesterday about Redsail laser cutter. He bought our laser machine 4 years ago. At that time he bought a laser model C120 and now we upgrated this model as CM1290.

He told me Redsail laser helps him to realize the dream–make a small shop, make some craft, do some business, and support a family.

This is how a laser made: with this laser, we can make a adversting company, cutting some acrylic sheet, cutting differnet design, you can even make a small factory. It just needs your idea and little money.

Where you can find this kind of laser?
